November Heartworm Raffle
Did You Know? Mississippi Ranks #1 in
Heartworm Incidence
Mississippi consistently ranks #1 in the United States for heartworm incidence, meaning more pets here test positive for heartworms than in any other state. For several years, veterinarians across Mississippi have reported some of the highest infection rates in the nation—nearly 10% of dogs tested in certain areas. More recent data shows the rate remains alarmingly high, averaging around 6%, compared to the national average of about 1% or less.
Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes—and it only takes one bite to infect your pet. Mississippi’s warm, humid climate and long mosquito season create ideal conditions for the parasite to thrive year-round. Even indoor pets are at risk, as mosquitoes easily find their way inside homes.
Understanding Heartworm Disease
In dogs, adult heartworms grow and live in the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels, causing lasting damage to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Left untreated, heartworm disease can lead to lung disease, heart failure, and serious organ damage.
Cats can also contract heartworm disease. While they are less commonly infected, even a small number of worms can cause severe complications, including breathing difficulties, vomiting, and sudden collapse.
The Good News—Prevention Works
Preventing heartworm disease is simple, safe, and far less expensive than treating it. Year-round prevention (through monthly medication, topical treatments, or annual injections) combined with annual testing is the most effective way to protect your pet. Regular testing ensures that your pet’s preventive is working properly and helps catch any infections early, when treatment is most effective.
